Memory Walk 2008

Since Annika was born nearly a year ago, we have talked about family traditions. Living far away from my family means that we will travel on many holidays, and Annika won’t have the same memories as I do of Thanksgiving or Christmas. I have thought a lot over the past few years of what traditions, outside of holidays, that I want to have with my children. I decided on one after hearing about the event two years ago. The Alzheimers walk took place on a Saturday afternoon and I read about it in the paper the following day. I wished that I had known about it before, but I was a day late. I vowed that the next year I would participate the following year. Well, last year I had Annika the night before the Alzheimers walk, and needless to say, wasn’t quite up to that challenge!

This year Lee, Annika and I are going to participate in the Coosa Valley Alzheimers Walk in honor of my dad. He was diagnosed with Alzheimers disease several years ago and over the course of our many visits, we have seen him deteriorating. We are very fortunate that my mother is able to keep him at home at this time, but we know that this too will soon come to an end. It is getting too difficult to calm and comfort him, and the strength that my mother continues to show amazes us all.

We are walking for my dad, for my mom, and the rest of our family. We are walking for all families that have this disease, and for those who are caretakers. We are walking in the hopes that our children, nieces, and nephews will never have to deal with what we are dealing with now, and to find advances in medicine to treat and prevent this disease.

If you are able, please make a donation to support this organization. Read up on the disease and see what you can do to help. Living so many miles away from my family, this is just one small thing that we can do to show support to all of them.

Our lofty goal is to raise $1,000 in the next two weeks. I know this is possible with the great friends and family that we have! We will keep you all updated with the money we raise, and include stories and photos from the day of the walk. Thank you in advance for your support!
