A lost art...

Not many people can fruit or vegetables anymore...and I can guess why - it is hard work! This weekend, I got together with a couple friends and we picked, cleaned, cut, mashed, mixed, boiled and canned nearly 30 pounds of strawberries! We visited a u-pick farm near our house on Saturday morning and picked all of our berries in about half an hour - there were berries everywhere because of all of the rain we have been getting here! We got 7 buckets of their finest and headed to Susan's house where we spent all day making basic strawberry jam, strawberry-jalapeno jam and holiday (strawberry/cranberry) jam. In all I think we made over 60 half-pints, and I am looking forward to breakfast tomorrow with a piece of homemade bread smothered in the jam! It was a lot of fun, and I know I'll be doing it again soon...but it also makes me extremely thankful for the modern invention of "refrigeration" so that we don't have to do this with all of our food to make it last!
